Missionof the Film School Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s vision is closely related to the vision of the strategic goals of the University of Silesia, primarily such as: modernity and openness, innovation and creativity, effective use of resources, investing in human capital, competitiveness, internationalization, individualization of teaching, identifying talents, developing relations between education, science and the economy. In particular, however, the mission of the School is to work towards the creation of outstanding works of culture, enriching the cultural and audiovisual industries, and developing the talents of young creators.
Film School. Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s aim is to combine tasks related to creation and teaching in the field of art with the use of innovative information and communication technologies. The audiovisual sector is one of the most important elements of the contemporary global and European economy, hence education and creativity are combined with the development of jobs, new professions and spectacular technological development.
Academic activities of theFilm School. Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s work focuses on several areas. These include: education in the field of film and television art and in the field of media professions in the broadly understood audiovisual sector, scientific research in the field of media knowledge and film, television and theater work. These areas determine the mission and strategic development goals in accordance with the “Development Strategy of the University of Silesia in Katowice for 2012-2020”, adopted by the Senate of the University of Silesia on January 24, 2012.
Strategy of theFilm School. Krzysztof Kieślowskitakes into account the directions of development of similar institutions in Poland, Europe and the world, and is correlated with trends in the labor market in the film, audiovisual, media, advertising and PR sectors in Poland and the European Union. The scope of the School’s artistic, scientific and didactic functioning is directly related to the Strategy for innovation and implementation of new information and communication technologies of the digital era.
The Strategy is consistent with national reform programs and initiatives of the European Commission (contained in the “Strategy of the University of Silesia”). In particular, strategic tasks include enriching the relationship between education, the use of new digital technologies and economic sectors related to media, audiovisual production and cinematography. Widespread digitalization in the cultural and audiovisual industries requires new forms of education, new research projects and adaptation of higher education, skills and qualifications of graduates to the requirements of the new economy.
In 2014-2017, a new School facility was built, which meets all the criteria of strategic goals presented above. This project was financed from budget funds (Agreement No. 1310 on granting a targeted subsidy to co-finance the costs of the investment entitled “Construction of the building of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in Katowice”, concluded with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education), commercial funds from the sale of facilities belonging to the University of Silesia (former seat of theFaculty of Radio and Televisionand the facility donated to the University by the city of Katowice). In terms of achieving research goals, it is planned to obtain funds from the Regional Operational Program Fund as part of the project titled “Art – digital – science”.
The construction and equipment of the new facility will enable the achievement of goals related to innovation, strengthen the cooperation of the university with its surroundings, increase international cooperation and build strong pro-innovation research teams and develop artistic creativity at the highest level.
Film School Krzysztof Kieślowskiwill continue to be an entity with great creative potential in the field of film and audiovisual arts. The artistic potential of the School allows and will continue to allow for activities aimed at the development of national culture and the creation of film works present in the European cultural space. Creativity in the field of new media, which involves creative creation combined with the latest technology, will undergo further development. We consider the School’s artistic and creative impact on other forms of scientific and teaching activities of the University to be a priority. It is related to European tendencies to combine science with creativity.
Art – operational goals:
In the field of scientific research, research will be carried out in two areas. Firstly, in the field of humanities, research on media culture, media systems and audiovisual works. Secondly, theFilm School. Krzysztof Kieślowskiwill begin research on the development and use of new information and communication technologies in the creative process, film and audiovisual production and post-production processes.
Science – operational goals:
Educational offer of theFilm School Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s work is closely related to the creation of young talents and market needs in the field of film, television, advertising, new media and other areas of audiovisual production and post-production. The audiovisual industry is one of the most dynamically developing branches of the economy, subject to constant technological, organizational and economic changes. Therefore, study programs will be adjusted to the above changes. At the same time, the high standards of the master school for artistic fields will be maintained, which will allow graduates to function in the competitive environment of film and television arts. Therefore, the educational offer will be conducted in several tracks. Firstly, for the most talented students pursuing an artistic program in the form of the most individualized teaching, giving measurable creative results. Secondly, in the form of a flexible offer of employees who create organizational, economic and creative values for culture. The school will continue to be open to students from Poland and abroad. The new headquarters will allow us to expand the offer for students from the European Union and other regions of the world. Classes are conducted in English for foreign students. The school provides infrastructure and high-class technological tools in the form of new media, a TV and film studio and new technologies for stereographic photography. The school will be open to didactic cooperation with other faculties of the University of Silesia, offering content related to film art and audiovisual art.
