History

History

Film School Krzysztof Kieślowski (formerly: Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television) was established in 1978. In 2001, by decision of the Senate of the University of Silesia, the Faculty was named after Krzysztof Kieślowski.

The School is an organizational unit of the University of Silesia, providing education in particular in the field of art and artistic disciplines. Film School Krzysztof Kieślowski employs staff with the highest artistic and scientific achievements. The school conducts teaching activities related to the fields of study offered, as well as artistic and scientific activities.

Fields of study offered at the School are: Organization of Film and Television Production, Directing, Film and Television Image Production and Photography, as well as Creative Management in New Media.

Since 2004, second-year students of the Film and Television Production Organization have been organizing the International Film Festival – Węgiel Film Festival, an event called “the festival of film schools”.

The modern building of the School includes: an atelier, specialized workshops for large-format photography, editing, multimedia techniques, photography, computer laboratories and a library and film archive.

The Film Etudes and Technology Production Office is involved in the teaching process, responsible for the production of student practical works and exercises. The teaching process is based on educational standards for the above-mentioned fields approved by the Minister of Science and Higher Education and the master school model typical of artistic didactics. The unit has scientific category A. It conducts scientific research in the field of humanities and in the field of art and artistic creation.

Film School Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s University of Silesia, together with the Academy of Music in Katowice and the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, are among the leading educational institutions in the field of art located in the region. It plays an important culture-forming role and is active in promoting film art and culture. In the creative and organizational field, the school also cooperates with the Drama School in Krakow, Polish Television SA, TVN Television, Polsat Television, Canal+ and Kino Polska, as well as the Silesia Film – Film Art Center.

The work of the School’s students is presented and awarded at national and international festivals (e.g. Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, Krakow Film Festival, New Horizons International Film Festival, Camerimage, festivals in Cottbus, San Sebastian, Clermont-Ferrand, Tampere, Santiago de Compostela, Kyoto, Munich, New York, Aspen, Vilnius, Kiev and Bratislava). The School’s activities in the field of production of student short films are financed by subsidies from the state budget (Ministry of Science and Higher Education) and from the operational programs of the Polish Film Institute.
